Gates Buying Guide

There is a wide choice of garden gates and as well as providing access they can really help complete the look of your fence, wall or hedge boundary. Gates come in a variety of designs, whether you want a decorative entrance to your driveway or a privacy gate, be sure to choose the best one for you.

Once you’ve selected your design there are a few key points to consider before you buy your gate:

  • How wide will you gate need to be – remember to leave a bit of room for your hinges and locks if needed.
  • How and where will you hang the gate – you can either attach your gate to a wall, concrete or timber posts.
  • Which way will the gate open – some designs will have left and right-handed opening versions.

Types of gates

Entrance gates

Mercia manufactures and stocks the following entrance gates:

  • Waney Edge
  • Feather Edge

As you’ll be using it all the time, your entrance gate must be pretty sturdy to cope. All our gates are strengthened using either a diagonal strut running from the latch to the opposite corner, or a double V method.
