How to Treat & Maintain your Shed

We advice our customers to use a high quality preservative on their garden shed. A preservative will protect your shed from wood rot, weathering and exposure to elements.

Wood treating is extremely important to your shed's structural integrity. Therefore, treating your building straight after purchase will protect and extend your product’s life, as well as, provide 10 years anti-rot guarantee. Wood treatment can be bought in all major DIY stores. However, Mercia stocks their own range of Wood Treatments. Why not add a touch of colour to your garden and choose between light brown, dark brown, red cedar and green treatments.

Mercia highly advices that you treat your shed before construction as it will cover every part of the wood. Treating your shed once it has been constructed may lead to parts of the building being left untreated. Coating it prior to building it will give it a uniformed finish.

Make sure you have all the correct pieces needed to  construct  your garden shed. Then apply the treatment  with a brush,  ensure that you cover every part of the  wood (only the side  exposed). Applying several layers  of treatment is beneficial  to ensure that it penetrates  and strengthens the wood.

If you're considering which preservative to choose  from then it is  essential to bear in mind whether your  building is constructed  using overlap or tongue and  groove cladding. An overlap  building is more  permeable, therefore it is best to use a spray  preservative. Whereas for a tongue and groove building has  planed timber making it less permeable so a brushed on or a  spread treatment may be the better choice.

Our range of brush-on preservatives are suitable for both types of timber and it can be used in sheds, playhouses, log cabins, fencing and more. Why not take a look at all our range of wood protectors, preservatives and colours, Click here!

We also recommend that all garden wood be treated at least once a year.
